Diablo 4 Confirmed To Have Cosmetic Microtransactions

Earlier this month during Blizzcon, the much-awaited Diablo 4 was finally announced. A lot of interesting information was revealed about the new title, but the addition of microtransactions has the community conflicted. As reported by PCGamesN, Twitch streamer Quin69 who discussed the topic with lead designer Joe Shely confirmed that the upcoming Diablo game will feature microtransactions in the form of cosmetics.

When asked about microtransactions or other similar subscription services, Shely replied:

“Diablo IV will be available as a base game, and […] we’re going to have expansions. You also will be able to acquire cosmetics in the game.”

These microtransactions are in addition to the price of the game and any expansions that will release post-launch. As such, players will already have a number of opportunities to spend their money on the game.

Microtransactions have long been a topic of debate, and it isn’t a real surprise to see them in Diablo 4. On their own, cosmetic microtransactions that don’t affect gameplay usually fall within acceptable standards. In fact, when done properly, the revenue generated from microtransactions can result in more content being added to the game. In the case of the Diablo games where expansion packs add lots of new features, it could be a very good sign for Diablo 4.

However, this approach may change after the game’s launch, similar to what happened with Fallout 76. On top of that, considering Blizzard’s current reputation within the community due to recent events, the developer would need to tread carefully for its new title.

Community feedback regarding the announcement is mediocre, with most fans claiming to be okay with microtransactions as long as they are not “immersion breaking”. Players are primarily concerned about the feel of the Diablo universe being broken with the addition of wacky cosmetics. Let’s hope that Blizzard sticks to the plan and keeps game-changing and unrealistic microtransactions out of Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 is now in development but a release date is yet to be announced.
